Cost of living in Portugal 2026: real numbers for rent, food, utilities, and healthcare

Portugal remains affordable compared to Western Europe, but prices have climbed; know the actual monthly costs before you move.

Portugal's cost of living has risen noticeably in the past two years, but it's still lower than most Western European countries. In Lisbon and Porto, expect to spend €1,500–€2,000 per month for a comfortable single life (rent, food, utilities, transport, occasional dining out). Outside the major cities, €1,000–€1,400 is realistic. Rent is the biggest variable: a one-bedroom apartment in central Lisbon runs €800–€1,200; in smaller towns, €400–€600.

Groceries are affordable—a weekly shop for one person costs €40–€60. Utilities (electricity, water, internet) average €100–€150 monthly. Healthcare is excellent and cheap if you're in the public system; private insurance or out-of-pocket costs are also reasonable. Dining out is inexpensive; a meal at a casual restaurant costs €8–€12.

Outside Lisbon and Porto, you can live well on €1,200–€1,400 a month; in the capitals, budget €1,800+.

The key is location. Lisbon and Porto have gentrified rapidly and now rival other European capitals in price. Smaller cities like Coimbra, Braga, or the interior offer genuine affordability. If you're on a tight budget, choose outside the tourist zones. If you want city life and nightlife, budget accordingly.
